The evening of Friday the 12^th of October saw Twig records start the mammoth task of recording two music videos in 24 hours for Kathryn Baker’s upcoming singles, “Delight” and “Coins”, directed by Edward Grant.

After poor lighting it was decided to put off filming till morning, so it was an early awakening as we headed to Wainuiamata beach to capture the first shots of sunrise for the video, “Delight” in the seemingly impossible task of now filming two music videos in 14 hours!

Despite the freezing winds and sand storms Kathryn put on a brave face and we captured some beautiful footage. After a late (and unhealthy) brunch the final shots were filmed (with some help from our little friend, Lucy Holtslag) and it was time to start the second video, “Coins”.

A garage was the next location and the afternoon and evening were spent creating and filming an ‘organised mess’ to capture band footage. Our day was almost gone and all that remained was solo footage of Kathryn.

Thanks to the aid of tight organisation and sugary treats our day was now done and our shots completed. Watch this space for sneak-peeks into the next phase, the editing process!

Kathryn has been busy in the studio over the past few months crafting her new album, “Distraight” due to be released this December. It is presently in the final stages of production under the skillful direction of Timothy Armstrong. Expect a dynamic album with chilling vocals and eclectic arrangements.

Twig visual studios have a busy few months ahead with two music videos in production for Kathryn’s upcoming singles, “delight” and “coins”. Watch for more updates soon. All singles / videos will be initially released in New Zealand, Australia and selected parts of Europe. Album due date - 1st December 2007.

Sometimes it’s hard to see where an album fits on the musical spectrum and this debut from Armstrong is a bit of a puzzler. There’s some indie rock, some experimental song structures that scream out prog rock, a bit of electronica and instrumentation that ranges from strings and horns to glockenspiels, keyboards and jangling guitars. The nearest and most obvious reference points would have to be mid period Radiohead and to a certain extent Thom Yorke’s solo explorations. Armstrong has a vocal range close to Yorke’s and shows a similar affinity with complex songwriting structures that allow songs to ebb and flow musically according to mood. It’s not an upbeat recording by any means with songs adopting a fairly slow tempo and often flowing from one track to the next making for an impressive almost orchestral album, albeit one that needs to be taken as a whole to fully appreciate Armstrong’s widescreen vision.
